En los sistemas de calefacción y refrigeración hidráulicos, el transportador de energía se transporta a través de secciones de tubería de diferentes longitudes. En el trayecto del generador de energía al consumidor, las longitudes y los giros de las tuberías, las ramas, las válvulas y los intercambiadores de calor presentan su propia resistencia que inhibe el flujo a través de sus secciones transversales y la rugosidad de la superficie.
